About the Program
The Program for the
Study of Contentious Politics aims to bring together the
resources of political science, sociology, anthropology and history at
Cornell University and elsewhere to understand the sources, the dynamics
and the outcomes of the various forms of conflict and contention in
today's world. With special interest in the exploding area of
transnational contention (e.g., the "global justice movement," Islamic
fundamentalism, democratization, and the new antiwar movement), the
program assists individual and group research, administers research
grants, organizes workshops and conferences, and participates in
international forums on these issues. The transformation of violent
confrontation into the non-violent pursuit and resolution of claims is
at the core of the program's concerns.
