My present work focuses on the relation of violence to culture, asking the old question posed most strongly by Walter Benjamin: is there purely destructive violence and, if so, how can it be understood. Topics include witchcraft, the massacre of 1965-66 in Indonesia, the fate of its survivors, and the colonial war in Aceh and its lack of effects on memory and identity.
