Koesel, Karrie    kjk32@cornell.edu

Karrie J. Koesel’s dissertation research is a comparative study of how China and Russia are coping with the new cultural and religious realities they face. Her research explores how local elites regulate cultural groups within their locale, and just as importantly, how these communities attempt to shape local politics in a period of economic and political change. Karrie spent last year in Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan conducting the Russian-side of her research project and will spend her next year divided between Changchun and Fujian, China. Karrie has a BA from Drake University in International Relations and Russian Studies and a MA from the University of Notre Dame in Political Science. When she is not working on her research, she enjoys imagining life as a budget gourmand.
