The Anthropology Collections were founded as part of the University Museum in 1868 by Andrew Dickson White. They contain approximately 20,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects whose origins span the globe, representing over 500,000 years of human history. The Anthropology Collections are housed in a portion of the University's original natural history museum in McGraw Hall and are used by elementary through university-level students and faculty for a variety of teaching, research, and exhibit purposes. Some highlights of objects from the Collections include pre-Columbian textiles and pottery from Peru, Native American baskets, prehistoric Mississippian pottery, Ndembu ritual masks and costumes from Africa, Yir Yoront tools and weapons from Australia, and a pair of Egyptian mummy cases.
